ADVOCACY - Civil Liberties, Corruption Laws

League Urges Senate Judiciary Committee to Restore Civil Liberties
The League is urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to protect the civil liberties of Americans when the issue of warrantless wiretapping comes before them in the coming weeks.

League Urges Senators to Support Public Prosecution Act
The League joined other groups this week in urging Senators to support bipartisan legislation that would strengthen public corruption laws and increase the ability of federal prosecutors to hold public officials accountable for misuse and abuse of their offices.

Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society (FOCIS)(featuring Robert F Kennedy, Jr)

Begins at 6 p.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium - Wayne State University
The inaugural FOCIS topic is sustainability, a dynamic concept that encompasses the environment, the economy, social issues, agriculture and politics, and its implications are both local and international.
FOCIS, a privately funded initiative, will provide a series of public events that bring the university's resources to bear on topics that define who we are and what we hope to become - locally, nationally and globally. Each year's forum will address a specific issue that will bring nationally and internationally celebrated speakers to Wayne State's campus. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is an advocate for the environment and will share his perspective on issues of sustainability, including jobs, global warming, health care, immigration and world leadership during his lecture, Our Environmental Destiny. Student political convention, Mazzara Administratin Services Bldg.Elected officials have been invited to address issues facing Michigan including the fiscal status of local and state government. Several workshops will be held to discuss issues affecting students, the Michigan economy and global concerns. LWV will participate in a workshop. Public is invited to participate as well.

League of Women Voters Study on Local Governance in Michigan
Christ Church, 3 -5 PM

Two Wayne County Commissioners Gary Woronchak and Phil Cavanaugh will participate in a panel discussion regarding the issues. Come help us learn about the different powers of county government versus city and state. Should any powers be shared or merged? Background information, including pros and cons, will be presented.
